Jessye Norman is the diva of our times. Recognized by all for her unique voice that has made her the most sought after opera singer in the world, Jessye Norman has marked the field of lyrical song by her unique stamp. Winner of a Grammy Award in 2006 for her entire carrier, the Mayor of Pasadena in California declared the 22nd of September the "Jessye Norman Day". Known for her voice but also for her amazing presence and sparkle, we all remember Jessye Norman wrapped in the French flag singing La Marseillaise a capella in front of one hundred thousand people.
At Baalbek, she will sing Duke Ellington, Bernstein and Gershwin hits, with a tribute to the great legends such as Nina Simone, Ella Fitzgerald… inside the temple of Bacchus.
Born of a nocturnal encounter at the American University of Beirut in 2008, Mashrou' Leila is a seven-member band that fuses the craft of a music workshop with the punch of stadium rock. With their distinct approach to storytelling and orchestration, they have composed some of the most melancholic ballads and raucous anthems in contemporary alternative Arabic music, and went on to perform them live at sold-out venues and high profile festivals all over Lebanon, the Middle East, and Europe.
Their eponymous debut album and the 'El Hal Romacy' E.P. unfold like cinematographic fictions starring lovesick characters in desolate motels or wandering insomniacs in ghostly cities. At times quirky and playful, at others bitter and somber, the songs demonstrate the band's great versatility and sensitivity in dealing with musical form, lyrical narrative, and socio-political concerns.
